Correlates of growth for mathematically gifted students
Abstract
This study examined the effects of student characteristics on mathematics achievement for three definitions of giftedness (gifted in general, mathematically gifted, and high achieving) from kindergarten through fifth grade using a nationally representative data set, that of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. It employed a hierarchical linear model to estimate the impact of student characteristics on the initial status and slope of the Item Response Theory-scaled mathematics scores (dependent variable) of children across time. The student characteristics used were gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, definition of giftedness, initial reading ability, and motivation in 3rd grade. Findings showed that student characteristics accounted for over half of the variability in student's initial status. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
