Abstract
In original essays developed for this volume, a variety of theories and recently accumulated empirical knowledge about the origins and characteristics of scientific excellence are examined, including: the allocation of resources and rewards in science; how role performance is assessed; a look at the formation of scientific elites; the traits shared by productive researchers; the development and distribution of giftedness; and the sociopsychological contexts that foster (or discourage) superior scientific performance.
