Programs designed for teachers’ training should prepare them to attend to the needs of talented/gifted students in their classrooms. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether future teachers had sufficient knowledge to attend the talented/gifted students. The sample consisted of 170 undergraduate students (145 women, 25 men), who were enrolled in teachers’ preparation courses in 2 private and 3 state universities in Brazil. A questionnaire with six open questions about talent/giftedness was administered in a group setting, and answers were classified by content analysis. The results indicated that teachers have several doubts about these concepts and question if they are responsible or the school administrators are responsible to attend to these students. In conclusion, future teachers are not receiving adequate preparation to guide talented/gifted students in their classrooms. There is a considerable amount of literature on leadership, particularly as it relates to organizations, government and the military. However, educators and psychologists know considerably less about early precursors of leadership, how leadership develops in youth, possible gender differences, and the relationship of leadership, intelligence and creativity. A global consensus exists that leaders are needed and that we shouldn't delay the early development of leadership skills. The authors propose a model to enhance creative leadership and introduce a teacher-completed rating scale, the Gifted Rating Scales to help accomplish this. As demonstrated, there are possibilities to detect early creative and intellectual giftedness among children and youngsters in the classrooms and expectations to move from a basic level of competence to reach an elite or expert level in any field, facilitating the emergence of leadership. There is considerable diversity among South American countries in relation to regulations and procedures for identifying and developing giftedness in children and adolescents. The experiences of three South American countries (Brazil, Peru, and Uruguay) are described to illustrate the variety of approaches. Although these countries do not share the same cultural or linguistic backgrounds, there are commonalities among them regarding the development of gifted children and adolescents. Despite federal and state regulations regarding education for high-ability and gifted children, educators still face many challenges when implementing these laws, including myths regarding giftedness in the general population. Resources provided to public education in these countries are scarce, however several programs are being offered to improve motivation and excellence among gifted children and adolescents. The role of professional associations and research on giftedness is considered of vital importance to increase public awareness of the social and educational needs of this special population.
