The basic premise of this article is that the child prodigy is a distinct form of giftedness which must be understood on its own terms. In contrast with the child of great general ability, the prodigy tends to have a more focused, specialized, and domain-specific form of giftedness. Studies of prodigies have contributed to changing theories about the nature of giftedness (e.g., from single to multiple) and will likely continue to do so. Along with the related phenomenon of savant syndrome, the prodigy points to a set of complex relationships between psychometric intelligence in the traditional sense and expression of talent within specific domains like music or mathematics. Based in part on findings from studies of prodigies, it is likely that there are important roles for both general and specific abilities in most forms of giftedness and that they represent two distinct evolutionary trends to maximize the likelihood of human survival. the theory of co-incidence attempts to identify the major sets of forces that participate in the process of development and to comprehend how they work / the theory will be successful to the extent that it identifies critical facets of the process of change, specifies how these facets interplay to catalyze developmental or positive change and explains all known situations, including the most extreme ones such as the [child] prodigy and the prodigious savant use the theory of co-incidence to try to organize some of what is known about Mozart so that we may better comprehend him (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)

begins by providing a general overview of the individual histories of research on the prodigy and the savant / combine discussion of the two phenomena by comparing examples of prodigious performance with ones of savant performance in two of the domains where both have been found: music and art / conclude with a speculative discussion of possible brain-based commonalities and differences serving as substrates for prodigy and savant capabilities (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)
