This reprinted article originally appeared in Gifted Child Quarterly, Vol 34(1), 21-26. The following abstract of the original article appeared in (see record 1990-21181-001). Compared performance on tests of specific abilities commonly associated with intelligence for 112 13-yr-olds who were extremely mathematically gifted (MG) or verbally gifted (VG). VG Ss scored higher on verbal and general knowledge tests, and MG Ss scored higher on tests of nonverbal reasoning, spatial ability, and memory. Findings suggest that speed might also be an important component of extreme giftedness. Results (1) have implications for the selection of MG and VG Ss for special programs and (2) support the use of the Progressive Matrices for identification of MGs in particular. reflect on the complex difference between intellectual giftedness and genius / focus on factors, many intriguing in and of themselves, that are characteristic of genius / the author's primary thesis is that the emergence of genius is best described using a multiplicative model / argue that exceptional achievement is a multiplicative function of a number of different traits, each of which is normally distributed, but which in combination are so synergistic as to skew the resulting distribution of achievement / how many different traits are involved in producing extraordinary achievement, and what are they / provide some conjectures that can be drawn on to answer this critical question intelligence / creativity [the creative process, psychosis, productivity, mental energy, other personality correlates, characteristics of genius: some conclusions] / giftedness and genius: important differences / educational implications (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)

review the literature on individual differences in cognition or intelligence with an emphasis on the literature derived from the study of gifted individuals the chapter is divided into six sections / set the stage by briefly tracing the concept of giftedness from a historical perspective / discussion borrows heavily from the work of Grinder (1985) / consider giftedness from four current perspectives: the psychometric perspective, the cognitive components perspective, the cognitive correlates perspective, and finally the neuropsychological perspective / most of [the authors'] work has been conducted within the cognitive correlates perspective / draw some "general" conclusions [in the final section] (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)

describe the planned 50-yr longitudinal study that is being conducted by the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY) / present data from SMPY and the psychological literature that have relevance for identifying the early psychological antecedents of competence and satisfaction at all points along the math/science pipeline, from selecting a college major to earning a doctorate in a technical discipline / factors especially conducive to exceptional achievements will be given particular attention, as will special influences that contribute to the optimal educational and vocational development of the nascent physical scientist; possible influences related to gender differences in achievement will be stressed Ss are selected for [the] longitudinal study around ages 12 to 13, in the seventh or eighth grade (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)

focus specifically on factors relating to educational/vocational choice, exceptional educational/vocational achievements and gender differences within the gifted population / our research . . . is also aimed at program experimentation and refinement of well-known educational interventions draw on the longitudinal findings from SMPY [Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth] to illustrate key antecedents to gender differences in the physical sciences / describe the design of our study and its theoretical framework / [discuss] gender differences in actual achievement among the mathematically talented and some empirical findings involving gender differences on familiar as well as underappreciated variables critical for choosing to excel in math/science domains (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)
